Movie Responses

My comments for the body art video:

Can paying someone to shoot you be art?

I will begin by stating the definition of art given by the dictionary. Art is “the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.”  For the sake of this argument, I will take the standpoint that the video was real and not faked.

Let’s start by breaking this down piece by piece. First, art is the “expression or application of human creative skill and imagination” so anything created by a man that is the visible representation of his feelings can be considered art.  The one man who decided to be the canvas to display the art had the feelings and reason to get shot; the emotions that would make a bullet scar an expression of himself.  However, he was not the only artist in this scene because the man who shot him actually possessed the human skill to create the image or scar the other man wanted to display.  Therefore this became a collaborative effort.

The next part of the definition of art states that art “typically is in a visual form… to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power”.  Well, getting shot was not the same as painting a canvas, but it definitely will leave a visual scar or lasting image for people to see. That scar he hopes will be appreciated by the world to show his inner tumultuous feelings of being rejected and shot at by society.

Whether or not the video was real or just faked, art has such a broad reach that even something as contradictory to human nature as purposefully getting shot could be considered art under these contexts.
